All modern mass produced products are supposed to be lead free. Lead
based solder is best used to repair older equipment that is already
lead based, but also works fine (and produces a better joint) with
lead free components.

There were a lot of problems with early lead free compositions and
unfortunately they've created some rather toxic fluxes and alloys to
try and solve the problems. I've never taken a shine (much like the
joints) to lead free solder for hand soldering. It was another of the
misguided eco-hippie decisions rammed through the crumbling European
state. Lead was used in the traditional solder alloys because it
works really well. Many of the British component suppliers were
pushed to the edge of bankrupcy in the transition period when they had
to find double the storage space over-night to stock their remaining
lead based component stock and the new (more expensive) lead free
stock.
