I'm not sure if I have the wrong of the stick, but I would've thought that
consumables would have to be supplied by the user, could get very expensive
otherwise.

I don't have a problem with lead free, I use it exclusively.  You just have
to make sure you have your iron set to a higher temperature and use good
quality solder like a 0.7mm multicore solder.  I mean obviously horses for
courses but I certainly don't have any problem with it.

I don't have the answer to this, but if most manufactured products use lead
free then wouldn't lead free be more suited to repairs and mods coz you're
matching the solder already used?
