Alison it sort of depend on what you want to learn. i have a book
which unfortunately I've lent to a friend on radio electronic. it is
basically the old course of the us navy for WWII but is basically
the uk reprint.
this book mainly deals with valve electronics but it covers all of
the core principal in electronics.
its called the BASIC ELECTRONICS course in 6 parts, it can come as 1
volume or it can be in 6 separate parts as can be seen here
(http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Illustrated-Course-BASIC-ELECTRONICS-Parts-4-5-6-1959-/380616985594?pt=Antiquarian_Books_UK&hash=item589e8a4bfa)
or Basic Electronics. Navy Training Course. Navpers 10087
it's also a good idea is to go to either to the second hand book
shop in otago lane or an oxfam bookshop as you can quite often find
electronics books there for a couple of quid. the good thing about
electronics is that regardless of how old a book is the information
in them are still correct they just don't cover some of the more
modern discoveries.
I hope this is of help.
regards
dave
