i had a look at introductory books a couple of years ago and settled on 

All New Electronics Self Teaching Guide
http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/0470289619/

which i found great, unfortunatly my copy is on loan to a friend at the 
moment, but i think a few other people here have it

it dosen't assume any knowledge and lets you work through making example 
circuits to see each of the concepts in practice
