[ELECTRON] Make/Works Project

Hi everyone at the Electron Club,

My name is Fiona Scott, and I am a final year Product Design student
at Glasgow School of Art -and I've just joined the Electron Club.

Over the summer I got the chance to work for a furniture maker, and
since then have been hugely interested in making, manufacture and the
tangibility of design in Scotland. From this, I am currently proposing
a project concerning a platform (both on and offline) that both
facilitates and celebrates making, manufacture, craftsmanship and
fabrication in Glasgow across all creative disciplines (from ceramics,
to bookbinding, to CNC, metal casting, laser cutting, arduino etc)
-and makes sourcing and the production of work a less
daunting/frustrating experience.

At its core the project (titled Make/Works) takes the form of an
online directory service that provides the ability to find and source
fabrication of work in Glasgow, building up a trustworthy and curated
database of designers, artists, craftspeople,
fabricators,manufacturers and small businesses. The aim is to make it
more transparent where and how materials, supplies, physical
processes,specific know-how, workshops and creative services available
in the city exist. This hopes to empower people in the city by being
able to produce things that are ‘Made in Glasgow’ instead of
outsourcing abroad and for makers, it will hopefully increase demand
and help businesses grow. In the bigger picture Make/Works looks to
exist with a supporting blog dialogue, events, showcase exhibitions
etc too.

Anyway, I am emailing, as due to the ethos of the Electron Club and
work you do it seems like you would all be great to talk to about it!
So if any of you would be interested at some point, I would love to
have the chance to meet up and discuss the project with some of you,
or ask you some further questions about whether you would use this
type of service, or wish to be involved.
