More than you could possibly imagine given the nature of the projector industry.

The manufacturers could make the projector sense when the unit had not
been receiving a signal for a given time then switch itself off, but
that wouldn't be good for profits at all.

There are some rather neat projectors that use a fairly standard 150W
metal halide lamp which not only lasts for about 5000 hours, but costs
about 40 quid to replace.
