Wordpress updates.

Hi,   I have a couple problems with our "Wordpress" website, it will not update certain plugins, when I click "update" it goes through the motions and then I get the message, "Update Failed: The update cannot be installed because we will be unable to copy some files. This is usually due to inconsistent file permissions." This has only started recently though the website has been up and running for some years now without any problems.    Problem 2:                    It tells me that Wordpress 4.7.4 is now available and to update. However when I click "update" I get the message "The update cannot be installed because we will be unable to copy some files. This is usually due to inconsistent file permissions.: wp-admin/includes/update-core.php"  Again this is just a recent problem, I had no problems  for the years the site has been running.
       I should emphasise that I am not a computer expert, ( hence the questions) but can follow lay-person's language, so if you could phrase any answers accordingly I would be very grateful.    John.
