Subject: Fire Alarm upgrades

Hello everybody,

Our fire alarm system is undergoing a comprehensive upgrade. We will
have engineers from ADT in most weekdays until work is complete, with
the potential exception of visits after our current exhibitions close
for final work in the gallery spaces.

This means that engineers will require access to all spaces to switch
over smoke and heat detectors, and fire alarm sounders.

During this period, while ADT are on site, there is an increased
chance the fire alarm will go off. Please begin to evacuate if it
does. Although there is a higher chance than normal that this will be
a false alarm, an activation relating to the installation works, we
should still act as if there is the possibility of a fire.

Ideally the Duty Manager and the ADT engineers should be able to
clarify the situation quickly. The DM will assist silencing the alarm
if necessary, and let the Fire Wardens, and all other building users,
know what the situation is.

Once it is confirmed to be a false alarm you can return to what you
were doing before the alarm started but after 30s or so, no-one should
be sitting around, waiting to be told if they should evacuate or not.

After works are completed we will be able to undertake weekly testing
of the system and we will begin a programme of drills, one or two full
building evacuations a year.

If you have any questions let me know.

Thanks,
Alasdair Rothin
Senior Duty Manager
