The history of many of those who have, or work, in computer technology
is the idea of open knowledge, or freedom of information etc. The
information commons of open source is massive around the world. When
people started using computers in the commercial sense - only few years
ago when you think of it - we had the information highway; you could put
the Encyclopaedia Britannica on a few disks - we were amazed. The PC was
going to revolutionise education for all...

So who decided the dream was going to turn into eCommerce? Where did the
academic toll booths on the information super highway come from? Why are
those who try to maintain the freedom of the information commons being
hunted and persecuted?

Most folk who use computers have no idea what Open Source is or means,
the commons and the common good suffer from the same lack of awareness.
The commons is the same thing in all of its manifestations and its
survival depends on making the critical connections between how all of
these different aspects work together.

The Common Good Awareness Project, was created to highlight some of
these ideas. Scotland's Common Good Fund is a collection of publicly
owned assets consisting of buildings, land and valuables, worth tens of
millions of pounds in different parts of the country. It is 500 years
old and has laws to protect it.

We believe the ancient network of history and assets the common good
encompasses, along with some technical know how could be used as a civic
tool of connection from the small town in the north to the inner cities
to create discussion of the generic ideas and issues these communities
share. These funds we feel should be pointed towards these kind of ideas
before they disappear under privatisation.

Social networking was not invented by Facebook, (but there is a good
chance it will be destroyed by Facebook.) Come along and find out -
chat, face-to-face, about ideas and on going projects around the common
good and the commons in general.

This is short notice, but the discussion is just beginning. It will
happen again, if you can't make it. We are happy to visit, do talks,
presentations, with groups of any size and level of interest in CGA. Bob

“In its most basic form, common good has its origins in the early Middle
Ages, when the ferm toun – a small settlement of interconnected families
living in close proximity for mutual protection and support – took a
collectivist approach to certain aspects of the farming operation.”
