Personally I go for Linux for the 'clunky'.

Sounds like Canonical is pushing an update that is breaking your install,
one that is not included in the release you are installing.

I noticed some errors on my Ubuntu install, similar "system error" pop-ups
over the last few days. (Though I initially thought it was due to some
experimentation with extundelete (dangerous dangerous utility) Luckily it
is not hosing my entire system. It may well be that you're having a similar
problem.

Try turning off updates after the next install, and search around the
Ubuntu forums.
