Which is the point I'd ditch mint as it is unity that is the clunky mess that slows a 64-bit quad core to a snails pace.

I give Mint a quick try and it's okay, but the desktop environment is still a bit clunky.  It'll be great when they finally catch up and start shipping with Unity instead.
