You need an account number but they will accept cash sales at their 
trade counters - and there's one of those on Baird Street near the big 
Post Office depot.

It may be a bit late to re-engineer your project, but you could try 
something like car central locking "solenoids".  These are not actually 
solenoids but geared motors with a little rack-and-pinion arrangement 
and about 15mm throw.  They can be quite powerful.  Or you could look 
for old VW/Merc/Audi ones which use compressed air!
