That is actually very sensible.  Many technical people use a laptop as
their work computer and leave the big PC for gaming.  If you travel a
lot you tend to appreciate the weight and size of a netbook, even if
they are slightly low on processing power.  I do all my PCB design,
assembly programming and component/PCB ordering on this netbook I'm
using right now, and it handles tasks like that with ease.  When I
travel it goes with me, and when I'm at home it plugs into a big
monitor and sound system.

By taking their own laptop into the lab people will all their own
files and software on a system they are totally familiar with, and
viruses will not be an issue.
