So the Dell tower has had the misbehaving HDD extracted. I've left the HDD
on the tower. Currently the machine is booting from CD without problem.
I have it running a memory test at the moment. Unfortunately the Debian disk
I have is so old that it's Lenny and doesn't complete the install. The Dell 
machine has had the physical problems lobotomised. It awaits a new mind.
