Electronics clubs have been around all over the world since the 70's
or before.  A modern hackerspace should really boast some modern
CAD-CAM manufacturing equipment.

I was recently informed that Glasgow did actually once have a public
communal workshop facility full of machine tools and woodworking
equipment, but it was shut due to fears of litigation over safety.
Apparently the machines were disposed of and the place converted into
council storage.  Yet another example of the legal industries
"litigation for profit" causing damage to society.
