Well you managed to reply to an existing thread, rather than start a new
one. What ever you did to send this message, you did it right, that's as
complex as it should be, no need for you to read a tutorial :)

The idea is that if you can send and reply to emails you can use a mailing
list to the extent you require.

I understand how the activity from today could seem confusing, this seems to
be down to a setting in an as yet unknown mail client.
Sorry for any confusion or inconvenience this has caused. Sometimes
situations like this can cause spam detection and prevention tools to kick
in.
