Judging from the general tone of the replies, I get the impression that even if email lists are a quick and dirty and slightly inelegant way of doing things, they have *little overhead* in terms of effort from readers. 

Sometimes quick and dirty is just fine. I'd really be disappointed if the email list went - I for one don't see me remembering to access a possible forum very much...
