[ELECTRON] Fwd: Use of the Electron Club for an open source/data mapping workshop

Si

thanks for sharing this info on list.

I do share my enthusiastic appreciation for ELECTRON club facilities with
peers, and I was
happy that the linked data meetup glasgow took place there,

I also encourage Jo and other linked data friends to join the club, so that
they can use its facilities, like everybody else, when they need to.

Jo's question however brings up a question of using the space for
'corporate', and the question of money.

I guess the bottom line would be ' is the meeting public and open to all?'

Would it be fair to say that electron club prioritises providing space for
self organised events for which there is no budget?

(I mean, if there is generous budget available from JISC, maybe electron
premises are not the best option?)

I value Electron club as a community open space for those occasion when
there is no funding to pay for
venues/premises. It was one of the few places in Scotland which offered the
use of shared premises with no ideological demands, no obligations, no fees,
on a pure community spirit.

I hope we manage to keep it as honest as it is, and wonder how money
may/would change that

:-)

Just thoughts

Hi,

We have been asked if the space can be used for an open source/data
mapping workshop in July - see below.

I am assuming this would be OK with people and have penciled it in, but
any objections let me know.

I will let the organisers know that the Tuesday date is potentially a
clash with Camcorder Geurillas, and will pass their contact ontot he
people who are taking from me in may.

best wishes
Si

dear Electron Club,

I'm interested in using your space to host a hackday-style workshop on
map-based applications with open source and open data, either 7th or
19th July.

(I thought i wrote to you earlier this week but can't find the sent
mail, so perhaps i didn't...)

The workshop would be part of a series organised by JISC's DevCSI
initiative to support developers working in further and higher
education. So HE/FE would be the focus but others would be welcome too.
Imagining about 20 people - is your workshop space big enough for that?
(I was there a couple of months ago for the Scottish Linked Data Hackday).

JISC provides a budget so we can afford to pay pretty well for the use
of the Electron Club. I am not a member as I live in Edinburgh and wish
the Hacklab here was on the same scale...

Please let me know what you think of this,

jo
