[ELECTRON] future, broadband, meeting, etc

Hi,

As you may recall Francis McKee (CCA Director) offered to meet with us
last month to discuss CCA's ongoing support for the Electron Club and
get familar with more members as I will be stepping down.

Anyway, as things went it wasn't possible. He got caught up in other
commitments which meant he couldn't make the dates originally proposed.

I will try and arrange for another meeting this month but meanwhile we
need to press on with other people taking over my responsibilities at
the Electron Club.

Ben Dembroski has offered to provide hosting for the website, and Blair
offered to help get a new website up and running.

For the mailing lists, the options are either for something to be set up
on Ben's server, or if we are to shift to using the Groupserver system
we looked at a few weeks back, they offer a free service that Electron
Club could sign up to. This would take care of both hosting and
maintenance, although it would not be possible to customize it in any
way, but it is posisble to have your own URL directed to it and for the
mailing list addresses (so members at electronclub.org could still be used
for example). There will need to be one or more people to act as
moderators for the lists - individual group lists should continue to be
run by the groups themselves but will also need to move to whatever new
system we adopt. We should aim to get the transition to the new
server(s) started this month.

Kenny Macleod (CCA head technician and Production Manager) has been in
touch this week regarding the broadband. The CCA have now offered to
take on the full costs of running this for us, so there will no longer
be any need for people to fundraise for the costs of this. The CCA will
be taking this over at the end of April - there may be some downtime as
they transfer it to their own provider.

I am also setting the end of April as the deadline for my own departure,
so we will need people to have taken over my responsibilities by this point.

The main thing here is for one or more people to act as the liason with
the CCA, keep them updated about new members and who needs access ot the
room, provide advance notice when workshops are happening, respond to
enquiries for them and pass on news for when the building is shut etc.
It is also useful for someone to forward information to their marketing
people for any public events at Electron Club that people would like
advertised through CCA.

Internally there needs to be someone to respond to enquiries from the
public about the Electron Club - passing on invites to things such as
the BBC workshop last month, and welcoming new members, helping new
groups get started using the space, etc.

It is probably best that this is shared out between a group of people
and a dedicated mailing list could be set up for that. But first we need
to know who is willing to be part of this.

I have booked the room for a week on Thursday, 14th April, at 6pm. Can
everyone who is interested in helping with the ongoing running of the
Electron Club try and make that?

If people can't make the date but want to be involved, just let me know
and I'll make sure you get included in any ongoing arrangements.

I will try and get Francis or someone else from CCA to be at this as
well so we can sort that stuff out at the same time.

best wishes
Si
