1 metre at 4.7 ohms on a 3V supply would pass a current of 638mA
giving a thermal power output of about 2W. With alkaline cells the
power would fall steadilly as the batteries dicharged. With good NiMh
rechargeables the output would be lower (2.4V for 2 cells) but would
remain fairly constant throughout the discharge.
