You can set your computer to check if there's a CD ROM present at
boot-up and use that before the hard disk.  That gets done in the BIOS
settings, I'll not try and explain it here because the way it's done
depends on your system.

If it's any consolation I too "upgraded" to Ubuntu 10 and it took ages
and rendered my system completely unusable (ACER laptop).  I managed
to salvage some files with a copy of the earlier Ubuntu run from the
CD ROM then reloaded my system with the earlier version from scratch.


Other than that and the lack of proper support by the printer
manufacturers, I've been very happy with Ubuntu.
