might be nothing to do with Ubuntu, e.g. CPU overheating or RAM problems.

Do you have an Ubuntu boot CD; does it boot correctly off that?  If
it's dual boot, does it boot into Windows correctly?

Also, depending on the version of ubuntu there should be an option in
the boot menu to check memory.

Other than that it's going to be hard to help out, could be all kinds
of things.  If you can boot off a bootable CD then you can at least
copy your data off and then do a fresh install.
