[ELECTRON] RepRap - have set up separate list now

Hi Alice,

Some possibly useful info:

My flatmate is planning on having a go at building a Reprap 2.0 "Mendel"
machine and I've been helping him source the bits cheaply, using UK
suppliers where possible.

We ordered the bare PCBs, and the NEMA 17 motors, from Makerbot
Industries in the US. They were the only supplier with the PCBs in stock
and cheaper than UK suppliers on the motors.

The electronic components we got from a mix of Digikey and Farnell - I
can dig up and give you the lists if you want.

There seemed to be a bit of a bottleneck on availability of the printed
plastic parts when we started, so we're going to wait till we've got the
electronics running before trying to get those. It looks like they're
starting to appear now though, see http://forums.reprap.org/list.php?175

Note that prices are high (e.g. $350 for a recent set on eBay) because
it takes a lot of machine time (and hence human supervision, in
practice) to print them even though the raw materials cost is low. Also
people are trying to recoup some of the cost of their own machines (or
a bit more on top...)

There are savings to be had by getting some or all of the parts from
people who produce them in other ways than printing, e.g. CNC milling
them from solid blocks of plastic. If you get a working machine that way
you can always replace them with your own parts later, selling on the
milled ones.

The other thing you need is various bolts, belts and other mechanical
bits. You can get these from a combination of RS and Orbital Fasteners.

I'm trying to keep down my email intake so I'm not going to join the
list just now, but if we get anywhere over here then I'll send a report.
And if you get bits and start building things over there, I'd be
interested in coming over from Edinburgh to look/help.
