      So,
Saturday’s workshop went well. Even if it was difficult to cover all the workings of inner-workings of AHX (not least because of Tom's temperamental Amiga). Sometimes it can be difficult to decipher tutorial or readme texts for
tracker software and its handy to have someone as experienced as Syphus
to show you how its done. Thought I’d give a brief overview of what we
covered.
"AHX is a protracker-like music editor that was designed
especially to create C64-like synthetic tunes. There is no support for sampled instruments
as chip tunes are made to be as small in size as possible. So an average AHX tune has a
length of about 200 bytes - 5 kbytes (unpacked). All waveforms of the C64 are supported:
Triangle, Sawtooth, Square and White Noise. Also Hi-/Lo-Pass filtering effects are
    supported." - Pink

To get AHX running you’ll need:

An Amiga – AHX will run on most Amiga models but
600 and newer models are reccomended. The built-in PCMCIA port will
allow you to connect a CF card for use as a hard drive making it easy
to transfer programs, demos and music downloaded to your PC.
WinUAE – If you don’t have an Amiga system you can
still use the WinUAE emulator. It is quite complex to set up. So, it
might be worth joining 8bitcollective where one of the resident Amiga
experts will help you get up and running. Unfortunately it is only
available for Windows. Mac users might consider using Hively tracker as an alternative to AHX.
AHX Software – You can download AHX here.
AHX documentation – No doubt you’ll want to pick
up Lavaburn’s edited instruction manual. It gives a much more concise
overview of commands and inner-workings of AHX. You can download it in
PDF format here.

An important things to note is that .ahx files can be opened in AHX.
This will allow you to examine the work of experts like Syphus, Pink
and Jazzcat (and extract some nice instruments).
