About TED:

TED is an annual event where some of the world's leading thinkers and
doers are invited to share what they are most passionate about. "TED"
stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design -- three broad subject
areas that are, collectively, shaping our future. And in fact, the event
is broader still, showcasing ideas that matter in any discipline. The
diverse audience -- CEOs, scientists, creatives, philanthropists -- is
almost as extraordinary as the speakers, who have included Bill Clinton,
Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Frank Gehry, Paul Simon, Sir Richard Branson,
Philippe Starck and Bono. TED was first held in Monterey, California,
in 1984. In 2001, Chris Anderson's Sapling Foundation acquired TED from
its founder, Richard Saul Wurman. In recent years, TED has expanded to
include an international conference, TEDGlobal; media initiatives,
including TED Talks and TED.com; and the TED Prize. TED2010, "What the
world Needs Now," will be held Feb 9-13, 2010, in Long Beach,
California, with a simulcast event in Palm Springs, California.
TEDGlobal 2009, "The Substance of Things Not Seen," will be held July
21-24, 2009, in Oxford, UK and TEDIndia will be held in November 2009.

About TEDx Edinburgh

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called
TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring
people together to share a TED-like experience. The TED Conference
provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx
events, including ours, are self-organized.

Our event is call TEDx Edinburgh, where stands for x=independently
organized TED event, it’s the first ever to be held in Scotland. At our
event, TEDTalks video and local live speakers will combine to spark deep
discussion and connection in a small group.

The main theme for our event is going to be ‘Local Models of
Participation, Sustainability, Inclusion, (Not necessarily in that order)’.
Notes here: http://tedxedinburgh.wikispaces.com/

We are hoping to organise it entirely without any money exchanging
hands, and to have a mixture of well known and lesser known speakers.
Nobody will make a profit, and contributions, from venue to photography
and hopefully some refreshments will be entirely contributed in kind by
two or three different sponsors.

I am talking to organisations involved in promoting inclusion and
participation and many have expressed interest and even enthusiasm to
support this
Such as Inspiring Scotland. (It’s just rather time consuming and I have
a day job too!)

The first speaker we are proud to have on our list is David Erdal, who
will talk of employee owned business models (under the theme:
Participation). Read about him here

Contribution sought:
Help us find a suitable venue, for example, suggest a possible speaker
or two who would be able to provide a good model in relation to the
theme, or by offering some refreshments to the participants, or by
promoting the event within your network.

Proposed Outcomes

Scotland is the home of a great deal of good ideas, where models of
social and economic innovation have been pioneered throughout its
history. This event, the first of this kind to be held in Scotland, aims
to identify some significant (however small) contemporary examples of
such innovative models, and aims to trigger further interest of
independent individuals and communities to organise and promote similar
initiatives along similar thematic lines, and to promote some cohesion
around a community interested in open innovation and change across Scotland.

Additional information:

Venue: I am looking for a room to hold about 50-100 people (more or
less) that can be used free of charge (the venue is going to be listed
as a sponsor for this event)

Date: Last week of November (25th, or 26th, to be confirmed, but
alternative dates considered)

Duration: possibly a total of 4-6 hours, followed by informal party
somewhere cool not too far.

Topic: Models of Sustainability, Participation, Inclusion - Not
necessarily in that order

Type of talk: It should be a short talk 10-20 mins. (programme details
to be agreed later) that presents a model of sustainability,
participation and inclusion possibly from a working example of the
speaker's background. These can be drawn from a professional, media,
arts, academia, learning, technology, social and cultural domains,
travel, or other domain. I can be an example of participation, inclusion
or sustainability, which discusses the benefits, the challenges and
provides a model to follow.

Speaker who have given their availability so far:

David Erdal, Local Heroes
Helen Chambers, Inspiring Scotland
Eva Schonveld Transitionscotland.org
Alastair Tibbitt Greener Leith
Rob Kyle and Olly Cooper, Project Abundance
