Copyright law and market economics: who does the dancing and who calls
the tune?

With p2p driving recorded music revenues down to their 1994 level, and
over two million people now addicted to Spotify in the UK alone, SSCL
debate intellectual property at a critical tipping point; where access
trades-off against control.

Speakers:

Will Page, Chief Economist of PRS for Music. Based in London, and a
graduate of Edinburgh University, Will provides analytical support to
PRS for Music, which represents over 60,000 songwriters, composers and
publishers, and presents economic insight to the wider media, legal and
technology communities. His most notable work to date has been on
Radiohead’s In Rainbows, the Long Tail theory and a presentation to the
2009 Edinburgh International TV Festival on p2p in television and film.

Niklas Ivarsson, Director of Content at Spotify in Sweden. Based in
Gothenburg, Niklas is responsible for catalogue licensing and business
development. Since its launch in late 2008, Spotify has captured the
attention of over two million addicted users in the UK, and over six
million worldwide who enjoy free, simple and instant access to ‘spot’
and ‘identify’ millions of music tracks. We are honoured that they will
be able to participate in this SSCL session. (www.spotify.com)
