Hi all,

I am writing to introduce the project I am working on in case any of you are
interested in being co-developers or testers. I am developing an open source
mini FM transmitter called Niftymitter - basically a box into which one can
plug any audio source, and the device broadcasts on FM to any radio within a
short range (akin to an iTrip, if any of you are familiar with them). My
personal interest is not primarily in electronics but in designing the
product and interactions around it. As such the transmitter electronics are
based on Tetsuo Kogawa's Simplest FM Transmitter design.

I am doing this as part of a Scottish Arts Council funded residency at the
Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, Dundee. Through this I am
exploring the issues around open source design for craftspeople - the work
is shared under a Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike 3.0 license, and I
am looking for other designers/makers/hackers to get involved as
co-developers. I am also looking for 6 UK users to play with version 0.22
prototypes, exploring ways in which the device might be used and abused and
in what contexts.

There is more information at the project website, www.openthing.org , along
with all the relevant source files for any developers who want to get
involved. If you or anyone you know is interested in being involved as
tester, please email me with some information about yourself at
info at openthing.org . Feel free to forward this message.

cheers,

Roy
